A study of causal connectives in English and in Vietnamese in the light of figure/ground relationships

Causation can be expressed by various linguistic means. It is of great

importance to understand the nature of causation expressed by these different means in

the light of cognitive semantics. In addition, the choice of one causative construction over

another may differ in English and in Vietnamese. This difference may bring about the

negative impact on language transfer, and learners tend to fail to convey the causative

relation between participants in a causative eventIn this paper, causative constructions

with causal connectives shall be discussed and analyzed. The "so-called" backward

causality and forward causality will be discussed in the light of Figure/ Ground

relationships to &nd out the similarities and diferences between them. Then we propose

some solutions for Vietnamese learners of English to make the appropriate use of causal

connectives in English and in Vietnamese.

Meanwhile,inforwardcausality,thoughinbothEnglishandVietnamese,theEr oftenreceivesthefocusandactsastheFigureinEnglish.Yet,theforwardcausalityin Englishcanalsobeexpressed inVietnamesebymeansof thecorrelativesmentioned above.Thus,thereisFigure/GroundShiftsimilartothatinthebackwardcausality. Inconsiderationofepistemicdomainandspeechactdomain,thoughtheFigure/ Groundmodelissimilarbetweenthetwolanguages,differencesoccurwitheachlanguage asperthedimensionofcausality:backwardcausalityandforwardcausality.Whereasthe EcactsastheFigureandtheErastheGroundinthebackwardcausality,theEractsas theFigureandtheEcastheGroundintheforwardcausality. Inshort, thissubsectionisclosedbysuggestingadissimilaritybetweenEnglish andVietnameseintermsofthewaycause-effect(fact-causeorresultcause)relationship isrealized:whileinVietnamesethewaybothmarkers(oneofcause,theotherofresult) arecombined togetherwithin the frameworkof acausativeconstruction to showthe relationshipisverycommon,inEnglish,onthecontrary,onlyeithercausemarkeror resultonecanbeusedwithinacausativeconstructiontoexpressthesamerelationship, thoughemphaticeffectofcourse,mayvarydistinguishably. Viewed in theFigure/GroundShiftmodel, inthebackwardcausality,emphasis isputontheEc.Thus,theEcactsasFigureandtheErastheGroundinconstructions usingbecause.ThereisaFigure-Groundshiftincausativeconstructionswithsinceor aswheretheErreceivestheemphasisandthusactsastheFigureandcedestheGround functiontotheEc.Incontrast,inVietnamese,themainclausereceivesthefocusandacts astheFigure,thesubordinateclauseastheGround.Unlikebackwardcausality,forward causalityalwayssetsthefocusontheEr;thus,theEractsastheFigureandtheEcas theGround.TheVietnamesetranslationalequivalentssuggestthatemphasisisalsoput ontheEr;theErthereforeactsastheFigure,theEcastheGround.Thistsinverywell withTalmy'scause-resultprinciple. 3.2.SuggestedSolutions Thefactthatcausativeconstructionswithcausalconnectivesmaybeusedinthree domains:content-domain,epistemic-domain,andspeechactdomain.Difcultiesmaybe encounteredbyVietnameselearnersofEnglishwiththistypeofcausativeconstructions. Whatismore,inuencedbythecausalconnectivesbeingusedinthespeechact domain inEnglish,Vietnamese learnersofEnglish sometimesproduce inappropriate translationalversions .Forinstance,theymayliterallyproducesuchversionas"Tối naybạncólàmgìkhôngbởivìởrạpchiếuphimhay"insteadofdirectlyexpressingthe speechactinthemessage"Tốinayởrạpchiếuphimhay.Chúngmìnhđixemphimnhé" fortheEnglishcausativeconstructions:Whatareyoudoingtonight,becausethere'sa goodmovieon. Sincecorrelativeconjunctionsareused inVietnamese ,Vietnamese learnersof Englishmaybeaffectedbythetransfer,whichbringsnegativeimpactinthetranslational versions.Withtheuseofthesecorrelatives,theremaybeaFigure/Groundshiftinthe Vietnamese translational equivalents, which unexpectedly fail to convey the correct messagefromthespeaker.Letushavealookatthefollowingexample: Vìnóhọckémnênnóthihỏng. [2,p.209] Hefailedtheexambecausehedidbadlyatschool. IntheVietnameseversion,theemphasisisputontheresult:nóthihỏngwhereas inEnglish,theemphasisisshiftedtothecauseorreason:becausehedidbadlyatschool. In order to improve their understanding of causative constructions with causal connectivessoas toavoidpotentialmistakes in translation, interpretationand communication,VietnameselearnersofEnglishshouldbewellequippedwithknowledge about Figure/Ground shift in causative constructions. More specically, they should beawareoftheFigure/Groundshiftindifferentdomainuseofcausalconnectivesas wellasindifferenttypesofcausality:backwardcausalityandforwardcausality.What ismoreimportant,asEnglishpeoplesay:“Practicemakesperfect”,itisnecessaryfor teacherstodesignexercisestoconsolidatethelearner'sknowledgeoftheFigure-Ground relationshipsandtheuseofcausalconnectives.
