Học trực tuyến đang phát triển mạnh mẽ, nhất là trong giai đoạn dịch Covid 19
bùng nổ khắp nơi trên thế giới. Hình thức học này được đánh giá là giải pháp phù hợp nhất
trong thời dịch, đem lại kết quả cao cho việc dạy và học. Tuy nhiên, thay vì tương tác trực tiếp
với giáo viên trên lớp theo kiểu truyền thống, việc học trực tuyến yêu cầu người học sử dụng
máy tính hoặc điện thọai để tham gia lớp học, và điều này hình thành những bất cập khi áp
dụng hình thức học tập này ví dụ như học sinh dễ bị xao nhãng, cảm thấy tẻ nhát không tập
trung. Bài báo này chia sẻ kinh nghiệm để giảm thiểu những khó khăn của giáo dục trực tuyến,
và đưa ra một số giải pháp giúp tăng hiệu quả của việc học trực tuyến lên cao nhất có thể.

Tóm tắt: Học trực tuyến đang phát triển mạnh mẽ, nhất là trong giai đoạn dịch Covid 19 
bùng nổ khắp nơi trên thế giới. Hình thức học này được đánh giá là giải pháp phù hợp nhất 
trong thời dịch, đem lại kết quả cao cho việc dạy và học. Tuy nhiên, thay vì tương tác trực tiếp 
với giáo viên trên lớp theo kiểu truyền thống, việc học trực tuyến yêu cầu người học sử dụng 
máy tính hoặc điện thọai để tham gia lớp học, và điều này hình thành những bất cập khi áp 
dụng hình thức học tập này ví dụ như học sinh dễ bị xao nhãng, cảm thấy tẻ nhát không tập 
trung. Bài báo này chia sẻ kinh nghiệm để giảm thiểu những khó khăn của giáo dục trực tuyến, 
và đưa ra một số giải pháp giúp tăng hiệu quả của việc học trực tuyến lên cao nhất có thể.

Abstract: Online learning is booming during Covid 19 outbreak and it is considered as 
the most relevant solution for teaching and learning which definitely brings positive results. 
However, there are still some drawback while applying this type of learning. This paper is to 
share some knowledge to minimize the negative site of online education.

PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES TO INCREASE THE 
EFFECTIVENESS OF ONLINE EDUCATION 
A. Introduction 
1) Online education definition 
Online education (also known as e-learning) is a method of virtual learning 
through an electronic device such as a computer or a smartphone which connects to a 
server in another place with electronic lessons and necessary software to be able to ask / 
request / give questions for students to study from a distance. Teachers can transmit 
images and audio via broadband or wireless connection (WiFi, WiMAX). Particularly, 
when Covid started in late 2019 all around the world, online learning is on top priority, 
offering learning programs to students of all levels remotely. 
2) Online education in Vietnam 
Online education takes up a number of forms, however, in Vietnam there are three 
main forms. The first form is teaching on TV. Programs under control of Vietnam 
Ministry of Education and Training are delivered via television channel. These include 
Maths, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry, History, etc. With this method, a teacher 
delivers the lesson with whiteboard like in a real classroom, however, their teaching will

be fully captured and broadcasted on TV. The audience of VTV7 channel are mainly 
students who choose the subject to join. 
The second form of online education is teaching on social networks which 
becomes a popular method nowadays. YouTube is one of the hottest platform with more 
than 1 billion users. In Vietnam, the average person spends more than 50% of their total 
online time for YouTube. It can be said that this is the effective foundation to support 
online teaching with diverse and detailed lessons content. Similar to YouTube, 
Facebook also has a large number of users. Many centers and teachers have set up 
groups and pages on Facebook to post lessons and use it as a main channel for teaching 
which is easy to perform, free of charge and teachers can interact directly with students 
via Livestream or messenger. 
The third form is using software to support online training. Under the complicated 
situation of the current Covid-19 epidemic, this form becomes very popular now in 
Vietnam, where schools of all levels choose software as the official way to deliver 
teaching and learning activities. These include: Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google 
Meets. 
B. Practical activities to increase the effectiveness of online education 
Online education is supposed to bring a number of benefits. Leaners are able to 
participate remotely anywhere so it saves time traveling. Education organizations also 
save a great amount of money for electric, water supply and furniture depreciation. 
Almost all of the software for online learning have the recording function, so students 
might be able to review the lesson as many times as they want. 
On the contrary, there are drawbacks when applying online learning. One of these 
is the lack of interaction between teacher and students, and among students themselves. 
There is limitation when students want to discuss with the teacher and with their friends. 
Secondly, students might get bored and are easily distracted by social network 
notifications, news and other online stuff rather than concentrate on the lesson. 
As many students struggle to focus and motivate themselves during online 
lessons, it is highly recommended that teachers should build up ways to improve 
engagement and motivation for students. A nice voice and intonation would help create 
interest in learning for students. The lesson content should be well organized. Besides, 
teachers should integrate interactive e-learning activities. These includes quizzes, e-
learning games, graphic organizers, and collaborative activities. 
1) Quizzes 
Quizzes are a good way to not only test students’ knowledge but add a bit of a 
challenge/competition to your lesson to motivate learners. Moreover, many interactive 
quizzes also provide a good opportunity to provide feedback by reviewing common

mistakes. The following quizzes are highly recommended:

a) Quizizz 
Students answer all questions in a race against the clock. Feedback can only be 
provided after all students complete the quiz. 
b) Kahoot 
Students answer one question at a time, which allows you to provide review and 
feedback after each question which is more teacher directed. 
c) Mentimeter 
Mentimeter can be used as a standalone quiz or can be used as a completely 
interactive slideshow. It also allows you to ask more open-ended discussion questions 
and displays results in real time

d) Jeopardy 
Jeopardy provides the same pedagogical function as other quizzes but in more of a 
game-like manner which allows for some group work. 
2) E-learning games 
Games provide another way to increase students’ engagement and motivation. 
When used in the right way, they can also provide an effective means of learning. 
a) Scavenger Hunt 
Scavenger Hunt is a pretty simple idea that can be used to make any activity into a 
“game” by splitting students into groups and give them a list of questions, then task 
students with finding the answers to the questions. Students can work collaboratively to 
complete the task in their group 
Once they find all the answers, students can complete a short Google form to lock 
in their time 
The first group to get all the answers correct wins. 
b) PowerPoint Games 
There are many PowerPoint templates available that allow you to create 
interactive elements in your slideshow. Some examples include spinning wheels, tic tac

toe, connect four and more. 
They can be used to gamify basic parts of a lesson (ie. by awarding points for 
correct answers) or they can be used for specific pedagogical purposes. 
C. Conclusion 
Online education is undoubtedly becoming more and more popular these days 
since it brings lots of benefits to both learners and schools, but how to effectively carry 
out this type of learning requires a teacher to build up interesting content and techniques 
by integrating practical activities to the lesson.
